The Harsh Sanction to Be Imposed in Brazil That Could Extend to World Football
In the match for the nineteenth round of the Brasileirao between Inter de Porto Alegre and Cruzeiro, Victor Gabriel, from the home team, injured midfielder Gabriel Pec with a tackle on the left shin, who immediately felt that "something was wrong" and requested that the medical staff come in.
As a result, although the Inter defender was sent off at the moment he committed the foul, the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) of Brazil decided to suspend him until the Cruzeiro player recovers and returns to training.
Although the Celeste ended up winning the match 2-1, the players quickly went to ask how Pec was doing. Finally, after several tests, the analyses determined that the midfielder, who was making his debut in this match, suffered a fracture and subsequently had to undergo surgery.
In the resolution issued by the Sixth Disciplinary Commission of the court, they concluded that giving a suspension of one to six matches was too lenient given the severity of the injury, so they decided to suspend him for the entire recovery period, with a maximum of 180 days.
This incident has already made headlines around the world, and several fans on social media have called for this measure to be implemented in all leagues once the sanction becomes public. As of now, FIFA has not released any statement regarding this, but it could mark a turning point in the regulation of the sport.
One of the main reasons for implementing this measure is to raise awareness among players about the importance of acting responsibly in risky situations, such as those that occurred in this match, to protect the physical integrity of their fellow professionals.
Gabriel recounted the circumstances surrounding the foul when he had to testify before the sports justice court. "I calculated that I would reach the ball first, and that’s how it was. Since the playing field was slippery and wet, I touched the ball and didn’t have time to withdraw my leg, which resulted in a harder tackle, but I had no intention of harming a fellow professional or acting in bad faith," he assured.
This Tuesday, the sentence was resolved, and Victor Gabriel was present in court to hear it in person. Upon being notified of at least 3 months of inactivity, he stated that he had "no intention of injuring him" and that he is truly remorseful. "I spent sleepless nights praying for him. I sincerely apologize to everyone at Cruzeiro," declared the defender.
This harsh sanction not only complicates matters for the player but also for Inter, as they are close to the relegation zone in the Brasileirao, occupying the sixteenth position, and they are not playing in the Copa Libertadores or Sudamericana, making this a serious moment for the club that continues to worsen.
On the other hand, Cruzeiro suffers a significant loss for what remains of the Copa Libertadores, after eliminating Boca and Barcelona from Ecuador in the group stage. Additionally, in the Brazilian league, they occupy the last spot to qualify for the Copa Sudamericana and are not far from the relegation zone, with 18 rounds left until the end of the season.
