Exchange Closures Accelerate Bitcoin Concentration in Binance Reserves
- Smaller exchanges face higher regulatory costs and lower operational volume.
- Binance's reserves increased from about 615,000 BTC in May to around 655,300 BTC in July.
An analysis published by CryptoQuant on July 27, 2026, argues that the recent closures of BitMEX and BitMart reflect a structural shift in the industry, where Bitcoin (BTC) liquidity begins to concentrate in an increasingly smaller number of large platforms. According to the firm, Binance emerges as one of the main beneficiaries of this transition, with BTC reserves that have recovered in recent months and remain at elevated levels.
The analysis, based on data from XWIN, links this trend to rising regulatory costs, tightening compliance standards, and the increasing presence of institutional investors. In this scenario, smaller exchanges are finding it increasingly difficult to compete against operators with greater financial and operational capacity.
The most recent evidence is the announcements of the closure of two historic platforms. BitMEX announced on July 23 that it will cease operations permanently on September 23, 2026, after 11 years of activity and having been one of the pioneers in the perpetual contracts market. As reported by CriptoNoticias, the company immediately suspended the registration of new users and began a phased process for closing positions.
Meanwhile, BitMart announced on July 26 an orderly closure of its operations. Since that date, it has stopped accepting new registrations and deposits, trading will end on August 26, and the platform will close completely on January 31, 2027. Following the announcement, the price of its BMX token plummeted between 50% and 58%.
These cases add to the closure of AscendEX, which exited the market on July 1, 2026, after facing liquidity issues and difficulties adapting to the MiCA regulation in Europe. Together, these three episodes reflect a concentration process that favors exchanges with greater capacity to absorb regulatory costs and meet institutional demand.
The evolution of Bitcoin reserves in Binance illustrates this trend. The chart shared by CryptoQuant shows that the platform reached nearly 670,000 BTC at the end of March 2026. Subsequently, the reserves dropped to a low of approximately 615,000-620,000 BTC in mid-May, before quickly recovering from the end of that month.
By the end of July, Binance holds around 655,300 BTC in reserve, while the price of Bitcoin hovers around $63,800. This recovery coincides with the exit of competitors from the market and a greater concentration of liquidity in the largest exchange in the sector.
CryptoQuant warns, however, that the increase in an exchange's reserves should not be automatically interpreted as a sign of greater selling pressure. An increasing portion of those Bitcoins supports arbitrage operations with spot ETFs, derivatives, institutional custody services, and liquidity provision by market makers, activities that require maintaining large volumes of assets under management without implying an immediate intention to sell.
For now, recent closures seem to indicate that the exchange market has entered a stage where size and the ability to meet regulatory requirements weigh more than the number of available platforms. In this scenario, tracking the evolution of Bitcoin reserves in major exchanges could prove as important as observing the asset's price to understand where liquidity is concentrating.
