U.S. Promotes Strategy to Develop Quantum Industry

On July 7, 2026, the White House held the Quantum Innovation Summit, a meeting that gathered government officials and industry representatives to strengthen the U.S. strategy in areas such as quantum computing, cybersecurity, scientific research, and technological development.

The event took place just days after President Donald Trump signed two executive orders aimed at reinforcing the national quantum research ecosystem. At the same time, accelerating the transition of government networks and critical infrastructure to post-quantum cryptography, a set of algorithms designed to withstand future attacks from quantum computers.

During the summit, senior administration officials presented the government's priorities to boost innovation in quantum technologies and explained the initiatives each agency was developing to expand the country's capabilities in research, development, commercialization, and specialized talent training. The agenda also included discussions on the need to strengthen supply chains, attract skilled professionals, and facilitate the arrival of these technologies in the market.

The day brought together representatives from federal agencies such as the Undersecretary of the Department of Commerce, Paul Dabbar; the Undersecretary of Research at the Department of Defense, Emil Michael; the Undersecretary of the Department of Energy, Darío Gil; the acting director of the National Science Foundation, Brian Stone; and the Chief Technology Officer of the United States, Ethan Klein.

Meanwhile, companies from the sector participated in panels to analyze the opportunities, challenges, and barriers that the industry still faced. One of the attendees was Niccolo de Masi, CEO of IonQ, who stated that U.S. leadership in the quantum era depended not only on technical progress but also on building an ecosystem that integrated government, businesses, laboratories, suppliers, developers, and end-users to accelerate the implementation of real applications. He explained that collaboration among all these actors is essential to turn scientific advances into practical solutions for strategic sectors such as security, computing, and communications.

Beyond the announcements made during the meeting, the summit reflected the administration's effort to consolidate the position of the United States in the global race for the development of quantum technologies. In recent years, countries like China have significantly increased their investments in quantum computing, communications, and sensors, intensifying the technological competition between the two powers. This scenario led the U.S. government to accelerate policies to strengthen national research, protect digital infrastructure against future threats, and foster an industry capable of competing internationally.

The summit concluded with a commitment to strengthen cooperation between federal agencies and the private sector to accelerate the development and adoption of quantum technologies. Furthermore, the meeting served to translate the recent executive orders from the government into concrete actions, aligning priorities in research, talent training, supply chains, and commercialization to enhance the country's competitiveness against the advances of other powers in the quantum field.
