The US Seeks Access to Venezuela's Gold and Minerals
The administration of Donald Trump is attempting to expand its influence over Venezuela's natural resources, particularly gold. Washington plans to attract American companies to the country's mining sector to meet national security needs. The White House is considering measures to deepen cooperation, including a possible presidential directive regarding critical minerals. US officials have held preliminary consultations with businesses to assess interest in investing in Venezuela's subsoil. This move is part of Washington's strategy to strengthen economic influence in Latin America and push out China. In March, the US Treasury began to ease sanctions, allowing transactions involving Venezuelan-origin gold and agreements in the mining sector. Investors face risks, including outdated geological data, control by illegal groups, a lack of significant reserves of rare earth metals, and legislative restrictions imposed by the new mining law.
