Commerzbank: Weakening Dollar Reflects Repricing of Rate Hike Path
The foreign exchange research team at Commerzbank noted that the dollar index fell at one point while the euro rose, reflecting a shift in market expectations regarding U.S. monetary policy. The Federal Reserve maintained interest rates, but significant internal dissent emerged, with three officials voting against the decision, advocating for a 25 basis point hike, highlighting growing concerns over persistent inflation. The market interpreted this decision as less hawkish than the dissenting votes suggested, leading to a decline in U.S. 2-year Treasury yields and the dollar. Meanwhile, long-term yields surged as investors believed the Fed's response was insufficient to curb ongoing inflation. Federal funds futures indicate a 63% probability of a 25 basis point hike in September. The market has revised its cumulative rate hike expectation for the year down from 42 basis points to 33 basis points.
