U.S. July PCE Headline Exceeds Expectations, Core Matches
The U.S. Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index for July showed mixed signals, with the headline exceeding expectations while the core matched them. According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) on the 26th, the July headline PCE rose by 0.2% compared to the previous month, surpassing the expected 0.1%. This rebound from June's -0.1% is attributed to a rise in oil prices due to tensions stemming from Iran. Meanwhile, the core PCE, which the Federal Reserve monitors, increased by 0.2% month-over-month and 3.3% year-over-year, aligning with expectations. With inflation significantly above the Fed's target of 2%, it is assessed that the current indicators alone may not resolve differing opinions within the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) regarding a potential rate hike in September. Market attention is focused on the speech by Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole Symposium on the 28th. Bitcoin is trading at around $78,300, down 0.8% from 24 hours prior, after surpassing $80,000 for the first time in 15 weeks and fluctuating in the high $70,000s.
