Solana Mainnet Transaction Data Limit Increased to 4,096 Bytes

Solana launched Transaction V1 on the mainnet on September 9, raising the data limit for each transaction to 4,096 bytes, a significant increase from the previous limit of 1,232 bytes. This new format is defined by proposals SIMD-0296 and SIMD-0385, aiming to complete workloads that previously required multiple transactions in a single atomic call. The Solana Foundation's migration notes indicate that this upgrade is a critical change to the execution block reading infrastructure. Block explorers, indexers, and other tools that are not adapted to the new format may freeze or return blank responses. When applications attempt to read V1 transactions or blocks without specifying the new version, the network server may reject the request with error code -32015. The update requirements also apply to RPC providers, with a migration checklist published by Helius. The new space accommodates uses beyond the old limits, including zero-knowledge proofs in a single transaction, as well as large multi-signature configurations and BLS signature aggregation. Before the mainnet launch, Transaction V1 was activated on the testnet during epoch 1025 on September 1.
