Musk: China's AI Could Become Global Leader, Surpassing Human Intelligence in Five Years

In an interview with The Economist, Musk stated that within the next five years, artificial intelligence could surpass the total intelligence of all humanity, and that Chinese AI companies are "very likely" to become global leaders in the future. He pointed out that if Chinese AI firms gain access to substantial computing resources, the pace of technological development will accelerate further. Musk believes that China has a clear advantage in power supply, while the core bottleneck in AI development is shifting from chips to power and cooling capabilities. China's electricity generation has already surpassed that of the combined total of the United States, Europe, and India, and could reach several times that of the U.S. in the future. He thinks that the effectiveness of U.S. export controls in limiting China's AI development is limited, and if China resolves issues related to advanced chips and lithography technology, the global AI competitive landscape could change further. Additionally, Musk anticipates that AI will first impact digital jobs such as software development, with future AI programming capabilities potentially exceeding those of 99% of software engineers. He believes that the productivity gains brought by AI could shift society from "universal basic income" to "universal high income," with work increasingly becoming a matter of interest and social activity.
