Monad mainnet upgrade reduces data storage costs by 98%

Monad activated its MonadTen revision on mainnet at 14:30 UTC on Sept. 2. The MIP-8 upgrade changes the network's charging method for reading storage, switching from slot-by-slot warming to groups of 128 consecutive slots. The first SLOAD on a page costs 8100 gas, while subsequent reads within that warmed page cost 100 gas. Previously, two untouched slots cost 8100 gas each, but now they cost 8100 gas for the first and 100 gas if both are within the same page. Common Solidity layouts can benefit from this discount as sequential state variables and struct fields are likely to remain within a warmed page. However, reads that cross page boundaries still incur a cost of 8100 gas each. MIP-8 maintains EVM execution semantics while altering the assumptions for tools that create access lists and gas estimates. The upgrade incentivizes developers by making it cheaper to read data stored closely together.
