Korean Accountant Embezzles Approximately $1.68 Million in Public Funds to Invest in Cryptocurrency

A level 7 accountant at an administrative welfare center in Yeongcheon, North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea, is suspected of embezzling 2.5 billion won (approximately $1.68 million) in public funds. From November 2025 to June 2026, this individual allegedly manipulated the local financial management system over 230 times, deceiving superiors under the guise of paying public expenses and transferring public funds into a personal account. The case was uncovered due to an unusually low budget balance at the center, leading Yeongcheon City to report the incident to the police on July 14 and dismiss the accountant. The police are investigating whether the embezzled funds were used for cryptocurrency investments. Yeongcheon Mayor Kim Byeong-sam publicly apologized and stated that efforts will be made to trace the whereabouts of the public funds and recover them.
