Kimi K3 Release Sparks Discussion on Yang Zhilin's Future
After the release of Kimi K3, the focus shifted to Yang Zhilin, with media outlets reviewing his background: an undergraduate from Tsinghua University, a PhD from Carnegie Mellon, and experience working at Google Brain and Meta, before returning to China to found Moonlight Dark Side. K3 is close to the cutting-edge models in programming and agent tasks in the U.S., raising questions about "Why didn't the U.S. keep him?" Some attribute the blame to the U.S. immigration system, with Khosla Ventures founder Vinod Khosla pointing out that U.S. immigration policies are driving away top global talent, while YC partner Ankit Gupta argues that not granting green cards to every AI PhD is foolish. However, Yang Zhilin's mentor, Russ Salakhutdinov, clarified that this explanation does not apply to Yang, as he had multiple opportunities to stay in the U.S., even receiving invitations from Apple executives, but chose to return to China to start a business, believing he would regret not trying. Some exclusionary accounts have directed their criticism at Russ and U.S. universities, claiming that the American academic community has "failed Americans," while other scholars defended Russ, stating that he is simply proud of his students' achievements. Carnegie Mellon University professor Jian Ma noted that while Yang Zhilin's success is rare, there are still many outstanding international students in U.S. universities, and the uncertainty surrounding immigration and international exchange will make it harder for the U.S. to attract talent.
