Rebeca Moen May 06, 2025 08:03 The Real World Crypto 2025 conference in Sofia, Bulgaria, showcased developments in cryptography, including SNARKs, digital identity, and the Digital Euro project. The Real World Crypto (RWC) 2025 conference held in Sofia, Bulgaria, gathered experts in cryptography to discuss cutting-edge advancements in the field. The event, which took place from March 26 to 28, 2025, featured a series of talks and workshops that focused on various aspects of cryptographic technology, including zero-knowledge proofs, digital identity systems, and the potential implementation of a Digital Euro, according to a16z crypto. Zero-Knowledge Proofs and Identity Systems A significant portion of the conference was dedicated to exploring zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs), particularly their application in identity systems. Anja Lehmann from the University of Potsdam discussed the EU’s Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI) project, which aims to enhance privacy through selective disclosure of identity information. Meanwhile, Abhi Shelat from Northeastern University presented a protocol for zero-knowledge proofs of signed credentials, utilizing Ligero proofs to optimize communication overheads. Security Concerns in ZK Proof Systems Security vulnerabilities in zero-knowledge proof systems were a notable topic at the conference. Oana Ciobotaru from Open Zeppelin highlighted a critical attack called the “Last Challenge Attack” on PlonK within the Ethereum ecosystem, emphasizing the need for secure Fiat-Shamir challenge computations. Shibam Mukherjee from Graz University showcased cache-timing-based side-channel attacks on ZK proving libraries, pointing out the necessity for constant-time implementations to mitigate such vulnerabilities. Digital Euro and Cryptographic Applications in Finance The conference also addressed the intersection of cryptography and traditional financial systems. Silvio Petriconi from Bocconi University presented findings from a commission exploring the feasibility of a Digital Euro. The study indicated potential benefits of using a UTXO-based chain for a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), citing better scalability and privacy compared to account-based models. Web3 and Cryptographic Innovations Web3 developments were also prominent at the event. Presentations included Mysten Labs’ zkLogin for privacy-preserving authentication on the Sui blockchain and discussions on compressing proofs using cryptography by MIT’s Yael Kalai. These talks underscored the increasing influence of web3 research on the broader cryptography landscape. The Real World Crypto 2025 conference demonstrated the dynamic nature of cryptographic research and its growing relevance in various sectors, from digital identity to financial systems and beyond. As cryptography continues to evolve, its impact on both legacy systems and emerging technologies will likely expand, fostering innovation and addressing complex security challenges.
