Google Gemini 3.8 Flash to Launch as Early as Wednesday, Internal Codename Skimaki

Google is set to release the next generation programming model, Gemini 3.8 Flash, as early as Wednesday local time. This model significantly narrows the gap in programming capabilities between Google and competitors Anthropic and OpenAI. Gemini 3.8 Flash is part of the smaller, faster, and cheaper Flash series, and its release coincides with major personnel changes at Google DeepMind, where Koray Kavukcuoglu has been promoted to Senior Vice President to take over operations. Google has faced setbacks in model development, with several prominent researchers leaving this summer, and the launch of the flagship Pro series new model has been delayed by several months, while the next-generation flagship Gemini 4 is still in the post-training phase. To enhance programming capabilities, Google has allocated more resources to reinforcement learning and has recruited former OpenAI post-training head Barret Zoph as Vice President of Research.
