Brussels Targets €10 Trillion in Dormant Savings
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has mentioned the €10 trillion of so-called "lazy" savings held by European households, aiming to redirect this amount towards the productive economy to boost growth. In France, liquid savings would exceed €1 trillion out of a total of approximately €6.6 trillion, with the majority invested in real estate and debt. This statement revives a debate in France about the possibility of mobilizing the savings of the French in case of need, an idea that had raised concerns. In a context of high public debt, the option of a forced reorientation of savings, through incentivizing taxation or new savings products, is resurfacing. In light of this pressure, diversifying investments becomes crucial. Savers are encouraged to move away from 100% euro-denominated savings, which are exposed to inflation, by turning to varied investments such as stocks, rental real estate, gold, and cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin (BTC), as a decentralized asset, is increasingly attracting European savers due to its resistance to censorship and monetary dilution. Although von der Leyen's statement is not a coercive measure, it raises questions about the future of savings and encourages investors to diversify their assets.
