The Bitcoin community is attempting to secure the .bitcoin domain to prevent it from being auctioned off and falling into the hands of third parties. The initiative is led by developer Wiz, creator of the mempool.space explorer. ICANN is accepting applications for new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) for the first time since 2012. Wiz proposes to keep the domain exclusive to the Bitcoin community, prohibiting its use by other cryptocurrencies. He emphasizes that many companies will try to register .bitcoin domains if there is no 'community priority application.' Wiz plans to submit a priority application to ICANN before the deadline, which ends on August 12, 2026. The proposal is to allocate the domains to a select group that works solely with Bitcoin, including network operators, protocol and software contributors, infrastructure and service providers, and event organizers. Projects promoting other cryptocurrencies will be prohibited from registering .bitcoin domains. Wiz states that he will have a common seat on the board, without veto power. He is seeking support from other projects for the application, including letters on letterhead and 'no objection' statements.

Bitcoin tore through the mid-$60,000s, cleared $70,000, blew past $75,000, and briefly touched $79,000+ before easing back to around $77,000 — a 20%+ move in a single week. The mood across crypto flipped almost overnight. But a violent rally is only the opening act. The more explosive the move, the more it calls for a clear, calm mind.
