Bankers Advise Ukrainians to Hold 30-40% of Savings in Foreign Currency

Bankers recommend that Ukrainians diversify their savings: 30-40% in foreign currency and the rest in hryvnias. Part of the funds should be placed in term deposits to generate income, while 20-50% should remain in current accounts for quick access. Vladimir Malyi, the business development director at Idea Bank, noted that short-term deposits and current accounts with savings features are suitable for current needs. Alexander Suprunovych, the director of the retail clients department at Kredobank, believes that hryvnia deposits provide the highest returns and recommends investing excess funds in this product. For short-term savings, he advises using high-interest savings accounts. Suprunovych also emphasized that foreign currency deposits with low yields do not offer significant advantages. Dmitry Zamotaev, the director of retail business at Globus Bank, recommends placing hryvnia deposits for up to six months and waiting until the end of the year to renew deposits when banks offer promotional conditions and higher rates. In the first half of 2026, Ukrainians purchased more cash euros than dollars, despite the euro's weakening in global markets.
