OpenAI Creator Event Sparks Environmental Cost Controversy
OpenAI hosted a promotional event for ChatGPT Work, inviting around 30 creators, which has sparked environmental debates regarding the power and water burdens of data centers. The event took place at Wildflower Farms, a luxury resort located about 90 minutes from New York City, covering 140 acres, with accommodation rates starting at $1,000 per night. Critics on social media have pointed out that OpenAI has been expanding its energy-intensive data center operations while leveraging a nature-friendly image in its marketing. OpenAI described the event as an educational-focused gathering linked to the launch of ChatGPT Work, referring to creators as an important community. ChatGPT Work is designed for professional use, supporting long-term tasks, research, and document creation. OpenAI plans to expand its Stargate data center site in the U.S. in collaboration with Oracle and SoftBank by September 2025, with a total investment amounting to $500 billion. According to Gartner, data center power consumption is expected to rise to 565 TWh by 2026, with AI-optimized servers projected to account for 31% of data center power consumption.
