a16z Crypto Discusses Compliance for Financial Institutions Using Permissionless Blockchain Networks
a16z crypto has published a new article discussing how financial institutions can utilize permissionless blockchain networks while remaining compliant. The article points out that although some traditional financial institutions tend to prefer permissioned networks due to concerns about anti-money laundering (AML), combating the financing of terrorism (CFT), and compliance with U.S. sanctions, these concerns are not insurmountable. The article argues that financial institutions can build and use permissionless networks while adhering to the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and relevant U.S. sanctions laws. By implementing robust compliance risk management controls, institutions can securely access permissionless networks without relying on centralized or permissioned validators, thereby enjoying the benefits of open-source and objectively neutral blockchain infrastructure.
