64% of Young Male Day Traders Feel Like Failures
According to a study by the Family Studies Institute, 64% of young American men engaged in day trading feel like failures. This situation reflects a sense of malaise within a generation accustomed to online markets and trading apps. Day trading particularly attracts young adult males, drawn in by the promise of quick profits, but many discover the harsh realities of markets where losses can accumulate rapidly. Social media, filled with success stories, exacerbates this quest for performance. Studies show that intensive trading can lead to psychological issues similar to those experienced by pathological gamblers, such as anxiety and loss of self-esteem. In France, the Financial Markets Authority (AMF) warns against the risks of speculative trading, but few initiatives target the mental health of young investors. Cryptocurrency trading, available 24/7, worsens this situation, with behaviors akin to those of pathological gamblers. A study from the University of Queensland found that crypto traders exhibit compulsive behaviors, such as constantly checking prices and impulsivity. Cryptocurrencies can drop by more than 50% quickly, leading to anxiety and psychological distress. On average, these traders spend 2.3 hours a day monitoring their positions and often engage in other forms of gambling.
