IREN’s Q1 FY26 results stated that the company had secured a $9.7 billion AI cloud contract with Microsoft and was targeting $3.4 billion in AI cloud annual recurring revenue by the end of 2026, alongside expansion to 140,000 GPUs.
That helps explain why IREN often trades more like a high-beta AI infrastructure stock than a traditional mining stock. It still has Bitcoin mining revenue, but investors increasingly care about whether the AI side can scale into a durable business.
The easiest way to understand IREN is to think of it as a picks-and-shovels company for AI. Instead of building a chatbot or training a model itself, it provides the physical infrastructure that lets others run those workloads. That includes power capacity, data center buildings, cooling systems, servers, networking gear, and long-term operations.
Its customers are not typical retail users. They are large enterprises and hyperscale counterparties that need reliable access to GPU clusters. In the Microsoft contract, for example, IREN is providing dedicated GPU services over about five years.
